Toltecalli Celebrates Grand Opening;
New Server Enhances Internet Security
Calli Ollin Introduces New Programs

April -- 2004
Toltecalli Academy celebrated its Grand Opening with a community celebration and fiesta on March 22, 2005. Awards were distributed to organizations and community members who were instrumental in the development and creation of the beautiful new facility. Among the activities that took place at the opening ceremony were a Nahuatl Greeting welcoming the new site into the community, student performances, luncheon and snack sales and various showcases of Calli Ollin Academy schools activities.

The new Toltecalli Academy campus is the first industrial project designed and built by La Causa construction, a branch of Chicanos Por La Causa -- Tucson. The building designers drew from the unique architectural influences of both ancient and modern Southwestern civilizations to create an innovative educational environment rooted in Southwestern culture while remaining undeniably forward thinking and responsive to the needs of the students and staff.

New Server Enhances Internet Security:

With the help of funds provided by the Enhancing Education Through Technology Title II Grant, a new server has been purchased for COA Schools. This new server will allow school administration to provide each student with a unique user profile on the COA network. By implementing unique user profiles, COA Information Technology staff may track computer usage by student and keep a close watch on the web sites and other areas students access via the World Wide Web.

In addition to the new server, and to underscore the need for computer security, COA schools has also implemented a Computer and Internet usage policy for all students. Please click to review the Computer, Internet, and other Electronic Use Policy.

Calli Ollin Academy Schools is launching some new programs during fourth Quarter for 2005:

  • Computer Repair Program: These classes will be taught after school by the Information Technology Instructor. Students who participate and maintain a C or better in this class will receive work on a donated computer performing repairs and upgrades, and at the end of the course, will keep the computer.
    For more information, please contact Mrs. Tridico.

  • Baby Calli: Initially taught with great success at Toltecalli, the Baby Calli program moves to Calli Ollin. Students who participate will earn credit in health while learning the parenting skills, responsibilities, and obligations by adopting a "Baby Think It Over" doll and caring for the doll.
    For more information, please contact Ms. Alvarez

  • Unidos en Prevención Sembrando Salud Alcohol Prevention Program: This grant was provided by the U. S. Department of Education through Luz Social Services. The course is being taught in conjunction with our Language Arts and Mexican American Studies and the curriculum and focuses on the awareness of alcohol and tobacco use within the Chicano community. The focus of the program is to inform students about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco abuse and to build communication between teens and parents regarding these issues..
